The Galician mussel (mytilus galloprovincialis) has already become the most important cultivated species of the 21st century in Spain. And there must be something about mussels from our coasts, when they were already being consumed by the inhabitants of the Castros in the 4th century B.C. and today more than 3,000 mussel beds are needed to supply the growing market demand.

CONSERVAS RÍAS BAIXAS 1907 selects the mussels from the best located mussel beds and waits patiently for the right moment to extract them, when the mollusk is at its best ripening stage. We prefer to break stocks rather than offer you a low quality spawned mussel.

The mussels, after being washed and purified, are opened by steaming and the beards are delicately removed so as not to damage the mussels. Afterwards, we fry them in good oil and after selecting the right sizes, we manually pack them one by one so that when you open the can you will find a beautiful vision of one of our star products.

The other secret that makes our mussels one of the most valued in the market is our escabeche, handmade with a recipe inherited from generations ago. We use paprika and red wine vinegar of the highest quality, organic extra virgin olive oil* and we top it off with natural bay leaf.

And as you probably already know, the Galician mussel is an excellent quality protein source, with nutritional values similar to those of lobster or hake. But in addition to being rich in protein, it has few calories and is rich in vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin C, E and K, as well as minerals: calcium, copper, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, selenium, sodium, iodine and zinc.
